Can A Piano Be Too Old To Tune?

There are three factors that will determine if a piano can be tuned after a few decades have passed:

  1. Life And Upkeep: How often has it been tuned and maintained over the years? Keeping a piano maintained on a regular basis will allow a piano technician to easily tune a piano regardless of how old it gets.
  2. How Much Has It Been Played: Was the piano played a lot or was it played weekly/monthly? When a piano is not played often, very little tuning is needed. However, if it is used frequently over many decades, then a professional would have to come in and do some adjustments.
  3. Environment The Piano Has Been In Has the owner kept the temperature regulated throughout its lifetime or was it in a place where it fluctuated most times? When a piano sits in a room where the temperature oscillates quite often, the keys, strings and other parts of the instrument may deteriorate or swell over time. As long as the owner provides a pleasant environment for their piano, tuning in the future should not be an issue.
