How Can I Tell If A Piano Is Out Of Tune?

Well tuned pianos will produce the same sound regardless of make and model. If it is difficult to tell if a key played is out of tune, review the following steps.

Does It Make A “Twang” Sound?

Once a key has been pressed, the sound should stay consistent and at the same tone. If it veers off or fluctuates, then it is out of tune.

Play Keys At Different Intervals

The sound Middle C produces will be similar when it is an octave above or below, except it will have a higher or lower pitch. Play both keys at the same time to see if they sound the same. You can do this for all keys on a piano.

Play Against Another Piano

If another piano is available and is well tuned, then play it along with the other piano the check if its in tune. The same keys played will definitely tell if the current instrument is in tune or not.

Poorly Controlled Humidity

The performance of a piano is affected by the humidity that surrounds it, as well as the temperature. Setting the humidity between 50% to 70% is optimal and keeping the temperature at least 68 degrees is standard.
